POSITION: Office of Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar is seeking a highly motivated individual interested in working as a field representative serving Council District 14 which includes Boyle Heights, El Sereno and Northeast areas of Los Angeles and parts of Downtown Los Angeles.

The Office of Congresswoman Jane Harman is seeking a strategic, proactive, and community-oriented individuals for the position of Field Representative. The position will be based in the El Segundo district office. Each will serve as liaisons to government agencies, businesses, and local community groups.
Essential Duties:

Attend meetings of local government and community groups, speak on behalf of the Congresswoman, and report back with recommendations for action on issues of importance to the district.

Responsible for tracking district priorities as identified by the Congresswoman, recommending strategies for achieving those priorities, and executing a district plan.

Identify, plan, and coordinate events for the Congresswoman’s district trips, including advancing the event site and writing event memorandums, talking points, and preparing background information.

Maintain an awareness and involvement in district affairs and issues, reporting to the Congresswoman as appropriate.

Contribute to a strategic weekly report, with updates on the progress of priority district issues.

Other related work as assigned.
Knowledge of/Ability to:

Familiarity with communities within the 36th Congressional District, including the South Bay and Beach Cities, Los Angeles Harbor Area, and Venice, Mar Vista, and West L.A. preferred.

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships/ verbally communicate effectively with constituent groups, elected officials, government agencies, and business leaders.

Strong written communication skills; ability to research and draft memorandums, reports, and talking points.

Access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Experience with Microsoft Word and standard Internet browsers strongly preferred.

Some event planning experience desirable.

Work night and/or weekend hours as necessary to attend meetings, staff the Congresswoman, or perform other essential duties.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

The Office of Congresswoman Jane Harman is seeking a strategic, proactive, and community-oriented individual for the position of Staff Assistant. The position will be based in the Congresswoman’s El Segundo district office.
Essential Duties:
Office Manager/Constituent Liaison:
• Serve as the first contact with constituents, government agencies, businesses, and local community groups in the office and via phone.
• Act as office manager for the district office, fielding calls and visits to the office, ordering supplies, managing correspondence and acting as liaison to vendors for service visits.
• Responsible for the overall administrative support duties of the office in support of policies, programs and events conducted by the office.
• Manage office calendars, schedule meetings and attend meetings and hearings as required.
Event Planning:
• Assist others in office to identify, plan, and coordinate events for the Congresswoman’s visits to the district.
• Advance event site and driving routes.
• Work closely with staff at event sites.
• Coordinate U.S. Service Academy nominations process – including recruitment, organizing an informational seminar, scheduling applicant interviews, and generally assisting the Congresswoman with nominating students.
• Coordinate Congressional Art Competition - including suggesting themes, reaching out to schools, collecting donations from sponsors, and organizing the Art Competition event.
Research, Writing, Data Management:
• Conduct legislative and other research.
• Write event memorandums and prepare background information.
• Write letters, Congressional Record statements, and other correspondence as required.
• Prepare materials for meetings.
• Contribute to a strategic weekly report, with updates on the progress of priority district issues.
• Coordinate correspondence filing system.
Program Planning:
• Supervise intern program. Recruit, interview and select interns.
• Train and supervise intern projects.
• Plan events for interns.
• Accomplish assorted special projects.
Other:
• Track constituent contacts.
• Maintain an awareness and involvement in district affairs and issues, reporting to the Congresswoman as appropriate.
• Other related work as assigned.
Knowledge of/ Ability to:
• Good phone manners, congenial and polite to others.
