The HONOR FUND The HONOR Fund is a Los Angeles‐based not‐for‐profit organization (Until the Fund applies for and receives tax‐exempt status, the Mexican American Legal Defense and education Fund (MALDEF) has agreed to serve as its fiscal sponsor) established in January 2010 whose mission is to advance the rights and freedoms of the Latino lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community through public education, leadership development, and advocacy. The HONOR Fund name is rooted in its founding organization HONOR PAC (Political Action Committee); honor means “pride” in both English and Spanish and speaks to the LGBT community’s intrinsic dignity of self, family and community. The goals of HONOR Fund are to increase awareness and acceptance of Latino/a LGBT issues among members of the Latino community, LGBT community, and mainstream society; encourage LGBT Latinos to live being “fully out” through assimilation in cultural, community, workplace, social and familial spaces; and promote political, economic, and educational access for Latino/a LGBT people.
Position Overview:
HONOR Fund is seeking a seasoned leader passionate about LGBT issues with experience working within the Latino community. As this is a new organization, the Executive Director must possess the initiative and drive to build an organization from the ground up, including seeking new funding opportunities while maintaining current funding relationships. The Executive Director must possess the ability to establish community, corporate relationships, and to develop and maintain coalitions. Initially, the Executive Director will be responsible for working with the Board to develop the organization from the start‐up phase, including: establishing the organization’s 501 (c)(3) tax‐exempt status, fulfilling the terms of the organization’s seed grants, including execution of the promotora program to test messaging and education programs within Spanish‐speaking Latino/a communities in Los Angeles, and advancing the mission and goals of the HONOR Fund by seeking additional funding opportunities and growing the organization to fulfill the HONOR Fund vision.
Specific duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director include the following:
Program Management and Development
• Develop and manage all programs, including leadership development,
advocacy, and community‐based education and outreach programs.
Fundraising and Administration
• Oversee and implement the day‐to ‐operations and administration of the
organization, including the development of administrative policies and
procedures, and the hiring, retention and termination of staff.
• Develop and manage the organization’s annual budget and submit monthly
financial reports to the Board.
• Ensure sound fiscal accounting and all necessary tax filings.
• In coordination with the Board, cultivate new donors, maintain existing
relationships with donors, and seek additional streams of revenue to ensure
the growth of the organization in line with the organizations’ mission and
vision.
• Spearhead the implementation of programs to fulfill grant obligations, and
for grant and outcomes reporting to funders and the Board.
Board Relations
• Provide support to the Board of Directors, staff and attend Board meetings,
and assist with Board management and development for HONOR Fund.
Communications and Community Relations
• Act as the “face” of the organization within the Latino/a and LGBT
communities and with strategic external coalition partners.
• Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization, interfacing with
English and Spanish‐language media.
• Perform governmental advocacy at the local, state and national levels as
needed.
• Engage with various constituencies through ongoing print, new media, and
other communications to convey the organization’s mission and programs.
• Other duties as assigned by the Board.
Requirements:
• The Executive Director must be bilingual (Spanish and English) as oversight
of, and interaction with, Spanish‐speaking communities will be an essential
component of leading this organization.
• Until additional funding can be secured, the Executive Director will provide
his or her own workspace, with minimal office tools and equipment
provided.
• The Executive Director must provide his or her own reliable transportation.
• Qualified applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or 7 years’ experience
as a senior nonprofit manager.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Nonprofit management experience, preferably experience running a
nonprofit Knowledge and/or experience in starting a 501(c)(3) organization
• Understanding of LGBT issues and organizations
• Background in program management and evaluation
• Experience with the development and implementation of community based
educational programs, specifically the promotora program model
• Understanding of, or experience with, organizing theory and practice
• Familiarity with web page management and new media
• Familiarity with Los Angeles City and County

This individual will work in coordination with the district communications staffer to develop and implement a strategic communications plan and identify new and emerging press opportunities. DEFINITION:

TYPICAL DUTIES

Voto Latino is hiring Field Organizers in Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Florida, and California.
Voto Latino seeks to immediately hire several field organizers for its United We Win 2010 mid-term elections voter registration campaign. The organizer will be responsible for conducting non-partisan voter registration in Phoenix, Tucson, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, Rio Grande Valley, Denver, and southern Florida.
The ideal candidates will be experienced in handling a wide range of grassroots organizing tasks, will be detail oriented, and will be self-starters with the ability to work independently with little or no supervision. This person must be well-organized, and work well under pressure while remaining flexible, resourceful, and efficient.
This individuals will form part of Voto Latino’s national United We Win campaign team. Founded in 2004, Voto Latino is the first and leading national, nonprofit, civic engagement organization to mobilize the fastest growing group of Americans – Latino youth.
The Field Organizers will:
- Register American Latino voters between the ages of 18 and 34 at a wide variety of locales, including but not limited to community college campuses, festivals, concerts, places of worship, and places of commerce -Excellent interpersonal skills
- Distribute United We Win campaign collateral to individuals and community groups
- Build local partnerships to maximize impact
- Recruit at least 20 local youth volunteers to maximize impact
- Report to Voto Latino’s national, Washington, D.C. office on a daily basis
